Gypsum products are construction, decorative, and artistic semi-finished and finished materials produced via molding and curing. Their main raw material is powdered anhydrite or hemihydrate gypsum (Plaster of Paris), blended with glass fiber, face paper, fillers, and additives.

How Gypsum Retarders Work

Anhydrite and hemihydrate gypsum hydrate rapidly when mixed with water to form dihydrate gypsum crystals, leading to fast hardening that shortens available construction time. Retarders adsorb onto gypsum crystal surfaces to slow crystal formation and extend the workable time of gypsum slurry. High-quality retarders barely impair the strength, whiteness, and fire resistance of finished gypsum products, while simultaneously improving the workability of the slurry. Common categories of gypsum retarders include protein-based retarders, citric acid, tartaric acid, and composite high-efficiency retarders.

 

Hydrolyzed protein polypeptides encapsulate gypsum particles with a colloidal film, inhibiting the nucleation and growth of dihydrate gypsum crystals. Citric acid binds calcium ions to form insoluble salts, which strongly blocks hydration and disrupts gypsum crystal structures.- Phosphates form calcium salt layers on gypsum particle surfaces to halt the hydration process.

 

A core advantage of vegetable protein retarders is that they only act through mild physical coating, without damaging the original crystal structure of gypsum.

Gypsum Board

Standard industrial continuous-production gypsum board/panels with calcined gypsum as the core, covered with special fire-resistant face paper on both sides, which are formed, dried and cut into standard-sized boards. It include standard, water-resistant, fire-resistant, high-strength paperless, perforated acoustic, and laminated decorative gypsum boards.

 

Applications: 
indoor partition walls and ceiling substrates; fire protection wrapping for steel beams and columns; interior wall panels for offices, shopping malls, residential buildings, hospitals and schools; acoustic ceilings for cinemas and meeting rooms; interior panels for prefabricated buildings.

 

Vegetable Protein Retarders for Continuous Gypsum BoaRDProduction

Continuous production lines require a stable working time for mixing, conveying, casting and pressing. Without retarders, pure gypsum sets and hardens in only 3–8 minutes, making continuous molding impossible.

 

Low dosage of vegetable protein retarders achieves ideal retarding performance without weakening the bending and compressive strength of the finished boards. This additive withstands high-temperature drying, leaving finished boards free of efflorescence and yellowing, with uniformly pure white surfaces. It also does not compromise the inherent fire resistance, sound insulation and moisture-proof performance of gypsum boards.
